Natalie Field, a third-year Duke medical student, presented two abstracts titled “Life After Neonatal Seizures: Characterizing the Longitudinal Parent Experience” and “A Novel Question Prompt List for Parents of Neonates with Seizures.” Natalie’s research highlights the challenges, resilience, and lived experiences of parents navigating day-to-day life after neonatal seizure diagnosis. This important work was also recognized in the CNS 2024 “Year In Review”. To read the full articles, visit our publications page.

Dr. Renee Shellhaas and Stephaine Rau presented a new abstract examining sleep as a modifiable risk factor for adverse neurobehavioral outcomes in 5-year-old survivors of acute provoked neonatal seizures. We are excited to share more updates and findings soon. Stay tuned!

Dr. Hannah Glass presented a new abstract on the school-age neurodevelopmental outcomes of children who had acute provoked neonatal seizures. Dr. Glass’ research found that while the majority of these children displayed typical development and functioning at school age, a subset showed challenges in behavioral, executive, and/or social domains. Additionally, children with disabilities were equally likely to experience difficulties across multiple domains.

Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to all the Neonatal Seizure Registry participants and their families. Your dedication, trust, and contributions have been instrumental in making this work possible!
